Guiding Me Home & Away

Recently added to the Dogalogue is the inspiring autobiography of Dave Thomas – the first top-level footballer to be registered blind and awarded a Guide Dog.

Titled Guiding Me Home & Away, the former England International sheds light on his football career to the loss of his sight.

The book showcases Dave’s astonishingly positive approach to life, as he negotiates everyday tasks the rest of us take for granted. Aided by his Labrador guide dog, Hannah, Dave has magnificently coped with a catalogue of obstacles that began with one defining moment when his driving licence was withdrawn. With no licence, Dave lost a massive part of his precious independence.

As a footballer, Dave was a popular speedy winger famous for his unique appearance – socks rolled down, sans shin pads. His most significant success as a player was part of the free-flowing Queens Park Rangers team in the 1970s. QPR’s squad of players which included Terry Venables, Stan Bowles and Gerry Francis. The reward for this rich vein of form at Loftus Road led to eight England international caps.

Guiding Me Home and Away is a book packed full of stories and anecdotes from the football world involving legends such as Don Revie, Alf Ramsey and Bill Shankly. These three footballing legends helped shape Dave’s career in one way or another. But his biggest inspiration is grandfather David Reece Thomas, captain of West Auckland, the team of pitmen from County Durham. In one of the most romantic and improbable of all football stories, West Auckland won the Sir Thomas Lipton World Football Trophy — forerunner of the World Cup — in Turin in 1909.

At the core of this autobiography is an incredibly likeable character with refreshing honesty. A character that is incredibly rare to find in top-level football. We’re sure that Dave’s incredible story will be compelling reading for all footie fans.
